The Association of Fund Raisers and Direct Sellers (AFRDS), a national association of more than 650 companies in product fundraising, believes children should never be allowed to sell door-to-door unless directly supervised by a parent or adult. Fundraising companies, school and organization leaders and parents must be diligent in assuring that children participate in fundraisers in a safe manner.
Again, never let children sell door-to-door in unfamiliar neighborhoods. Younger children should be accompanied by an adult. Older children or teens should use the buddy system and always tell their parents where they are going and when to be expected home.
When someone answers the door, instruct the kids to say their first name and the purpose of the fundraiser. Children should be instructed to never enter anyone's house unless a parent is present. Explaining your fundraising goals and what you will do with the money raised will increase the chance of a sale. Speak clearly and keep your speech short and concise. Practice a few times before you start contacting people.
Kids can also stay safe by make a list of friends, family, relatives, and neighbors to contact to avoid door-to-door sales. As parents must be involved with each fundraising activity, kids should make sure Mom and Dad have approved who you intend to ask to support your group. Another great idea for kids is to ask your parents to take a catalog to work.
Show confidence, smile, and always say thank you. Be yourself and have fun! Enthusiasm and a smile will invite people to look at your sales brochure.
Kids should not be allowed to carry large amounts of cash and children should be urged to never talk to strangers.
